What native Claude memory is
Per Anthropic’s help center, memory is on by default for Free, Pro, and Max across web, desktop, and mobile, and it works across chat and Cowork. Memories are stored as categorized topics under Settings, Memory, where you can review, edit, and delete them, and there is documented import and export between providers.
Chat search lets Claude reference earlier conversations, which makes the native layer more useful than a short list of facts.

Where native Claude memory is the better choice
- Your memory needs are personal context inside Claude: preferences, recurring topics, and past conversations.
- You want zero setup and no additional subscription.
- You live entirely inside Anthropic products.
Where MemoryRouter fits better
- Your work spans tools, including terminal agents and editors that Claude memory cannot see.
- You need the reasoning behind technical decisions, not a summary of the conversation.

Which one should you use?
Claude memory and MemoryRouter are complements more often than substitutes. Keep native memory for personal context inside Claude and use a vault for project memory that has to survive tool changes.
